The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has effectively blocked new foreign-manufactured robotic vacuum cleaners from entering the American market by adding "advanced robotic devices" to its Covered List as of July 28, 20261.
The FCC's Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau added two new product categories to the Covered List on that date: foreign-produced power inverters and "advanced robotic devices". FCC Media Relations Director Katie Gorscak confirmed to The Verge that robotic vacuum cleaners fall under the "advanced robotic devices" designation.
The agency defines an "advanced robotic device" as a software-controlled, autonomous robot that can perceive its environment, move on the ground, communicate wirelessly, and weighs more than 4.4 pounds including its charging station. The FCC says this definition fits virtually every modern robot vacuum equipped with LiDAR, a camera, and app connectivity.
The rationale centers on data security: the FCC has determined that autonomous home-mapping devices can collect sensitive information about floor plans and household habits.
Virtually all major brands are affected. Roborock, Ecovacs, and Dreame — all manufactured abroad — fall under the ban. iRobot, the U.S.-founded maker of Roomba, is also affected because its products are manufactured overseas.
The ban applies exclusively to new models that still require FCC approval. Devices that have already received approval may continue to be sold and imported, and units already in households are expressly unaffected.
Manufacturers are not entirely without recourse. A "Conditional Approval" process exists through which companies can apply for an exemption. Under that process, the Department of War determines whether a robotic device is considered safe.

The rule is a U.S. market-approval matter and does not apply in Germany or the EU, where the affected models remain available.
