LG Group and Nvidia signed a memorandum of understanding on August 13 at Nvidia's headquarters in Santa Clara, California, formalizing a strategic partnership that will produce a bipedal humanoid robot targeted for unveiling in the first quarter of 20271,2,8.
LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang attended the signing, which was also joined by LG Group Vice Chairman Kwon Bong-seok, LG Electronics CEO Lyu Jae-cheol, LG Uplus CEO Hong Bum-shik, and LG CNS CEO Hyun Shin-gyoon4. The MOU follows a meeting between Koo and Huang in Seoul in June where the two agreed to cooperate in AI12.
The humanoid robot will run on Nvidia's Jetson Thor onboard computing platform and be built using Isaac GR00T, Nvidia's open humanoid foundation model9. Nvidia's Halos for Robotics, described as a full-stack integrated safety system, will also be applied. LG will develop the robot under a "One LG" approach combining actuators from LG Electronics, sensors from LG Innotek, and batteries from LG Energy Solution.
"As our collaboration accelerates, the areas where we can work together in AI factories, physical AI and mobility have become clear," Koo said. "We will accelerate the adoption of AI by building industry-leading reference models". Huang said Nvidia's years of collaboration with LG would hasten the next era of robots, AI factories, and autonomous vehicles.
The partnership extends beyond humanoid robotics into three additional domains. The companies plan to build a reference AI factory site in the first half of 2027 based on Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin platform, followed by an 80-megawatt AI factory in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, in the first half of 2028. The Cheonan facility would use prefabricated modular construction that LG said will cut building time by more than 20 percent. The facility will serve as an operating base for physical AI and the development of robot foundation models.
LG and Nvidia will also cooperate on a physical AI data factory using LG CNS' PhysicalWorks robotics platform, which will collect field data for robot training and support synthetic data generation, training, and verification. The two companies will establish a joint task force covering research and development, field testing, and commercialization.
In autonomous driving, the companies plan to develop a next-generation in-vehicle high-performance computing platform based on Nvidia's Drive Hyperion architecture, integrating LG's in-vehicle infotainment and automotive software capabilities.
Before the bipedal humanoid arrives, LG plans to deploy its wheeled CLOiD robot on a washing machine production line at LG Electronics' plant in Tennessee by the end of this year to verify performance in a real production environment. LG established a CEO-led Robotics Business Center in June11.
LG Electronics shares rose 2.2 percent to 210,000 won as of 11:10 a.m. on August 14.
