Keith Thomas of Massapequa, New York, paralysed from the chest down in a swimming accident six years ago, can now feed himself and drink from a cup using a brain implant that bypasses his spinal cord injury, the Guardian reported1. Thomas could not lift his arms off his wheelchair when he began the trial in 2021. After surgery to implant electrodes in his brain and months of training, he regained movement in his arms and hands and can feel the sensation of touch through what researchers describe as a "double neural bypass". The Financial Times separately confirmed Thomas regained hand function through the technology2.
