Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) has signed a commercial Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) agreement with Agility Robotics to deploy the humanoid robot Digit across its manufacturing facilities, the companies announced on February 19, 20261.
The deal follows a successful pilot at TMMC's facilities, after which the automaker plans to use Digit to support employees with manufacturing, supply chain, and logistics operations. TMMC operates vehicle assembly plants in Cambridge and Woodstock, Ontario, and is Toyota's largest manufacturing operation outside of Japan.
"After evaluating a number of robots, we are excited to deploy Digit to improve the team member experience and further increase operational efficiency in our manufacturing facilities," said Tim Hollander, President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada.
Beyond the current deployment scope, Agility Robotics and TMMC said they will continue to assess further use cases where robots and AI could help augment automotive production. The companies plan to explore how automating repetitive and physically taxing tasks on production lines could reduce strain and increase safety for employees.
Agility Robotics describes Digit as a general-purpose humanoid robot designed for logistics and manufacturing work, capable of handling monotonous, process-automated tasks that are often difficult for companies to staff. The company says Digit can continually learn tasks and adapt to new manufacturing workflows using AI. Agility also offers Agility Arc, a cloud automation platform for deploying and managing fleets of Digits.
TMMC joins what Agility Robotics describes as a growing number of Fortune 500 companies deploying its humanoid robots. Agility Robotics is led by CEO Peggy Johnson and is headquartered in Salem, Oregon, with offices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Palo Alto, California.
The companies signed a Robots-as-a-Service agreement rather than an outright purchase. ANALYSIS That structure lowers TMMC's upfront capital commitment and shifts ongoing performance risk toward Agility Robotics. TMMC's selection of Digit after evaluating multiple robots provides a competitive signal for Agility Robotics in the nascent humanoid-robotics market, where automakers represent high-profile reference customers. The agreement's emphasis on ergonomic relief and safety — rather than headcount reduction — frames the deployment around workforce augmentation, a positioning that may ease adoption discussions with labor stakeholders in automotive manufacturing.
