Cursor launched Origin on August 17, an AI-native code hosting platform designed for coding agents, marking the company's first direct challenge to Microsoft's GitHub1.

The launch comes shortly after SpaceX completed a $60 billion all-stock deal to acquire Cursor. Origin is built for agentic throughput and includes automated conflict resolution, stacked pull requests, and comprehensive metadata for agent-written code. Users can get started by syncing existing repositories from GitHub.

The timing of the launch coincided with a GitHub outage, which VentureBeat characterized as exposing an opening in the AI coding race2.

GitHub generates around $2 billion in annual revenues, according to the WCCFTech report. ANALYSIS Origin's feature set — conflict resolution, stacked pull requests, and agent-specific metadata — targets friction points that arise when autonomous coding agents, rather than human developers, are the primary users of a repository platform. The deep integration with Cursor's existing AI coding environment creates a vertically integrated workflow from code generation to code hosting, a combination GitHub does not currently offer as a single product.

SpaceX's $60 billion acquisition of Cursor now appears oriented not just toward an AI code editor but toward a broader platform play that encompasses the repository layer itself. Origin's ability to sync repos from GitHub lowers the switching cost for teams already on GitHub, positioning it as a complement before it becomes a substitute.

Origin is currently in a limited beta rollout phase.
