Egypt has launched and handed over its first locally developed industrial robot, a robotic arm built with 80% domestic components and already deployed on a live packaging line1,3,5,6.

The robot was developed by Egyptian robotics startup Redbots in collaboration with the Industrial Modernization Center and CUBII, a domestic manufacturing firm, to meet an actual industrial use case. The unit is tailored for industrial packaging and automation on production lines and has been integrated directly into packaging machinery operated by CUBII.

Local content and motor target

The robot's 80% local component ratio is set to rise to 90% once its motor is manufactured domestically. Industry Minister Khalid Hashem attended the launch and watched a demonstration, saying the ministry would monitor the robot's performance at CUBII to assess whether it meets the company's production requirements. "The 'Made in Egypt' concept is evolving and expanding to reflect Egypt's capabilities in manufacturing and innovation, enhancing technology in local industry and integrating into global supply chains," Hashem said.

Hashem said the project demonstrates the ability of young Egyptian engineers to transform knowledge and innovation into industrial production. He added that the ministry is focusing on the development of machinery and production lines under Egypt's industrial strategy and will support initiatives to strengthen the manufacturing sector.

Three cooperation protocols

During the ceremony, three cooperation protocols were signed. Under the first, the Industrial Modernization Center and Redbots will provide technical support services to industrial facilities. The second covers the supply of robots for packaging machinery. The third, involving Redbots and Mansoura University's Faculty of Engineering, provides for educational variants of the robot for hands-on student research and training.

The launch ceremony was attended by Ayman Elbayaa, Assistant Minister of Industry for Digital Transformation and Executive Director of the Industrial Modernization Center; Sherif Massoud, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Mansoura University; Mahmoud El-Saeed, CEO of Redbots; and Ali Abu Zeid, CEO of CUBII.

ANALYSIS The robot's immediate deployment on a live production line, rather than remaining a lab prototype, distinguishes this from a demonstration project. The structured protocols linking Redbots to both industrial clients and a university engineering faculty formalize a pipeline from academic training to factory floor deployment.
