EngineAI Launches First Full-Sized Humanoid Robot Combat League in Shenzhen

EngineAI launched URKL, the first full-sized humanoid robot fighting league, in Shenzhen with 32 teams competing on standardized T800 robots.

Shenzhen-based EngineAI debuted the Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend (URKL), billed as the world's first freestyle combat tournament for full-sized humanoid robots, at the Shenzhen Nanshan Cultural and Sports Center on July 17, 20261,13,7.

The opening night's marquee moment: a white T800 robot named White Eagle landed a head-high kick on its black-colored opponent, Matador, dislodging Matador's head — yet the decapitated machine kept fighting6,8. According to EngineAI, the robot remained active because key control systems are housed in its torso rather than its head.

A total of 32 teams from more than ten countries — drawn from universities, enterprises, and research institutions — advanced to compete for a championship belt and a prize pool of 10 million yuan (approximately $1.48 million)2. Every competitor used EngineAI's standardized T800 humanoid robot as the base platform, with teams adding their own armor plating and tuning the software governing movement, balance, and reaction.

The robot is equipped with 360-degree LiDAR and stereo vision sensors for millisecond-level environmental processing. EngineAI first unveiled the T800 in December 2025. The unit is priced at roughly $40,5009.

Judges evaluated competitors on motion control, balance algorithms, perception and decision-making, power systems, and structural protection. Fights emphasized landing effective hits, staying upright, and recovering after knockdowns.

EngineAI founder and CEO Zhao Tongyang said the competition is designed to stress-test the full robotics stack. "This kind of competition upgrades everything — sensors, motion control, AI decision-making, neural networks, joint performance — laying the groundwork for home robots in the future," Zhao said.

Global Times quoted Beijing-based analyst Pan Helin as saying competitions like URKL can help people better understand humanoid robots and explore future uses, while noting the technology still has practical limits and needs more real-world testing. Separately, the newspaper quoted analyst Tian Feng as saying that making T800 robots available for competition could lower research costs and encourage cooperation between companies, universities, and research groups.

The URKL season follows a tiered structure: a July–August opening stage, a September–October second round, and grand finals in November–December.

The event drew attention beyond the robotics community. The Times of India noted the footage circulated amid broader discussions about autonomous weapons, referencing UN Secretary-General António Guterres's recent warnings about lethal autonomous weapon systems. "Let us call them what they are: killer robots," Guterres said, adding that machines selecting targets and taking lives without human control "must be banned by international law".
