ANALYSIS The humanoid robotics supply chain is splitting into two distinct races: one for the components that make robots move, and another for the software and safety systems that let them move among people. LG Electronics' push into actuators for Big Tech customers and Agility Robotics' cage-free Digit V5 represent complementary bets that the bottleneck is shifting from whether humanoids can be built to whether they can be deployed.
Why it matters
Actuators account for an estimated 60–70% of total material costs in a humanoid robot, and a single unit requires roughly 30 of them2. That makes the actuator market the gravitational center of humanoid economics. LG's entry, backed by a fully automated production line in Changwon and active order discussions with multiple Big Tech firms, injects a scaled consumer-electronics manufacturer into a supply tier previously dominated by specialist firms1. Meanwhile, Agility's V5 milestone addresses the demand side: removing physical safety enclosures that, as chief business officer Daniel Diez put it, "take up floor space, disrupt workflows, and essentially kill deals"3.
The big picture
LG is leveraging six decades of motor technology from home appliances into robot joint actuators. At IFA 2026 in Berlin, HS Division head Baek Seung-tae said the company can make motors "more than 30% lighter than competitors". LG launched its actuator brand, LG AXIUM, earlier this year with nine models and began soliciting orders from global robotics, logistics, and manufacturing companies. Technical consultations on production readiness with Big Tech customers are scheduled for October. The company has not yet confirmed contracts with specific firms.
LG's broader robot value chain draws on affiliates: LG Innotek handles components such as eyes and sensors, LG Chem is responsible for materials, and LG CNS manages data. LG plans to deploy humanoid robots first at its Tennessee plant and Changwon smart factory to validate performance before expanding into home applications.
On the deployment front, Agility Robotics posted a clip of Digit rearranging a room, dragging a couch and shifting chairs, demonstrating generalized manipulation across objects of different sizes, weights, and grips. The first Digit V5 machines will ship to early customers in December4. Current Digits remain confined to enclosed locations, but V5 is designed to operate alongside humans, with cameras and sensors monitoring the environment and software interpreting the scene before the robot acts. Agility stress-tested the system by pulling the floor out from under the robot; "it took a step and held on".
ANALYSIS LG's actuator play is structured less as a finished-robot gambit than as a component supplier strategy, mirroring how the company already sells compressors and display panels to competitors in adjacent industries. The October production-readiness consultations with Big Tech firms suggest LG is positioning itself as an OEM partner rather than a rival to companies like Agility or Tesla in the end-product market.
Baek's comments on Chinese competition are pointed. He said Chinese companies achieved cost reductions of about 10% in the past but that "in the first half of this year, the cost for Chinese companies actually increased". He emphasized LG's in-house production of core components and its global manufacturing footprint as key differentiators against Chinese manufacturers. ◆ The argument amounts to a bet that China's low-price offensive in robotics components is losing steam just as demand from Western integrators scales up.
LG has not yet secured technology for reducers, a critical actuator subcomponent, and plans to acquire it through internal development and external sourcing. ◆ That unresolved gap means LG's 30%-lighter motor advantage does not yet translate into a complete actuator offering; closing the reducer deficit will be a defining test of the strategy's viability.
Agility's cage-free milestone addresses a different constraint. Diez framed the barrier as "more about skills and batteries than cages," but acknowledged that eliminating enclosures opens retail and pharmaceutical floors that "can't even spare a locked-down cell". ◆ The December shipping target for V5 will test whether cage-free operation converts pilot interest into purchase orders in sectors that have so far been inaccessible to bipedal robots.
What's next
LG's October production-readiness consultations will be the first concrete test of Big Tech appetite for its actuators. The company plans to establish mass production systems within the year. Agility's December V5 deliveries to early customers will mark the first commercial deployment of a cage-free humanoid. LG's builder and commercial laundry businesses, growing at roughly 45% and 41% compound annual rates respectively over the past three years in North America, are now expanding into Europe, with the company doubling its European builder-focused sales force this year. Baek stated that "the most important form factor in a Zero Labor Home will be the robot".
