Nolla Health will use AI to diagnose and prescribe acne medications to patients in Utah without direct human oversight, in what Bloomberg described as a first-of-its-kind pilot in the United States, Bloomberg reported on October 51.
The pilot allows an AI system to both evaluate a patient's condition and issue a prescription, removing the requirement for a human clinician to review or approve the decision before medication is dispensed, according to the report.
ANALYSIS The pilot, as described by Bloomberg, eliminates the human-clinician checkpoint for a narrow clinical use case, placing the full diagnostic and prescribing loop inside the AI system.
The pilot's placement in Utah, rather than another state, is a relevant variable in understanding how the program reached approval.
