OpenAI acquires Pierre Computer, bets on code storage for Codex

Pierre Computer's Code Storage, a Git-based distributed system designed for machines, will integrate into Codex.

OpenAI will acquire Pierre Computer, a developer-tools startup whose technology is already embedded in Codex, for an undisclosed amount1. The company plans to integrate Pierre Computer's Code Storage product directly into Codex, adding storage infrastructure to the AI coding system2.

Pierre Computer describes itself as a builder of low-level, composable infrastructure for machine work. Its Code Storage product is a distributed storage system built on Git, with API ergonomics designed for machines. The system can hold generated code and other files that change over time, including agent memory files, design artifacts, and legal documents. Applications interact with repositories through the native Git protocol or software development kits.

Pierre Computer also maintains open-source projects — Diffs, Trees, and DiffsHub — which will remain open source after the acquisition.

The acquisition would place OpenAI among the companies challenging GitHub, the Microsoft-owned platform that has long served as a central repository and coordination point for software development. The competitive pressure comes as AI agents take on more coding work, increasing the volume of software that repositories must store and serve.

ANALYSIS By folding purpose-built, machine-oriented storage into Codex rather than relying on third-party repository infrastructure, OpenAI is vertically integrating its AI coding stack — owning both the agent that writes code and the layer that persists it.

The deal adds to a period of active strategic maneuvering by OpenAI, which has separately been pursuing regulatory engagement with Congress on frontier AI safety rules[3].
