OpenAI's enterprise business now generates more revenue than its ChatGPT-led consumer segment, CFO Sarah Friar told investors in a meeting on Friday, according to CNBC reporting by Kate Rooney1,2.

"We entered the year at 60-40, but enterprise has accelerated much faster than expected and those lines have now crossed," Friar said, according to a person who was in attendance, as reported by CNBC. "The majority of our revenue is now enterprise".

The disclosure came alongside several other growth metrics. OpenAI's annualized revenue run rate has hit $40 billion, with the run rate increasing 20% month over month in July. Enterprise customers grew 32% in July.

The investor meeting, which CNBC reported was scheduled prior to recent executive departures, followed a week of C-suite turnover at OpenAI. Revenue chief Denise Dresser stepped down, and Brad Lightcap ended an eight-year stint at the company. Friar fielded questions about both the company's roadmap and the executive turnover.

OpenAI president Greg Brockman also joined the meeting and told investors that cybersecurity is a critical piece of the business, while brushing off concerns about open-source competition.

Friar's statement that the enterprise-consumer revenue split had crossed ahead of the company's own forecast is notable. She had previously told CNBC earlier this year that OpenAI expected those business lines to converge.

ANALYSIS The revenue crossover from consumer to enterprise majority marks a structural shift in OpenAI's business composition. A $40 billion annualized run rate dominated by enterprise contracts changes the company's revenue profile — enterprise deals typically carry longer contract cycles, higher per-customer value, and greater stickiness than consumer subscriptions.

The timing of the disclosure — delivered during a week of senior executive departures — positions the enterprise growth narrative as a counterweight to governance concerns that investor questions about turnover might otherwise amplify.

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in February. ANALYSIS With enterprise now the larger revenue segment, the ads initiative represents a consumer-side monetization effort playing catch-up to the enterprise trajectory rather than leading overall growth.
