OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Academic Researchers on Wednesday, a program providing 100,000 scientists free access to its advanced AI models — including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro — through 20271,2.

The program is part of a broader $250 million OpenAI initiative designed to support external scientific research and discovery. Participants will receive a year of access roughly equivalent to the company's $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro subscription. Each selected researcher can invite four collaborators from their academic institution.

The initiative targets researchers across biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics and physics. OpenAI said data generated through the program will not be used to train its models, and participants will receive business-grade privacy and security protections similar to those available to enterprise customers.

The first 10,000 researchers will begin receiving access this summer at institutions including the Institute for Advanced Study and France's École normale supérieure, with the broader rollout continuing through 2027.

"Our strategy is not to decide which scientific problems deserve attention or try to solve them all ourselves," OpenAI said in a statement. "It is to put capable tools in the hands of the research community and let researchers pursue the q[uestions]".

The academic program follows a prior commitment: last May, OpenAI made $50 million worth of AI resources available to researchers.
