OpenAI has hired Patreon co-founder Sam Yam along with two other former Patreon executives to staff a new creator-focused product effort, a move that pairs subscription-platform expertise with OpenAI's AI infrastructure.
Yam, who co-founded Patreon 13 years ago and served as its technology chief, announced on X that he is joining OpenAI to lead Creator Product1,2. Drew Rowny, Patreon's former head of product, and Shannon Ma, its former head of engineering, are joining him. Both Rowny and Ma stepped down from Patreon in the past few weeks.
"We're going to build together with Creators at OpenAI and share early access to a new set of tools that I think will be critically valuable to Creators and their communities," Yam said.
The hires give OpenAI a compact but senior team whose combined experience spans the core disciplines of a creator platform: product strategy, engineering, and the business mechanics of monetizing creative work. Yam held the co-founder and CTO roles at Patreon; Rowny ran product; Ma ran engineering.
