Pony.ai unveiled its Gen-4 Level 4 autonomous heavy-duty truck at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover on September 14, co-developed with GAC Commercial Vehicle and built on the GAC T9 battery-electric platform1,4. Volume production is scheduled to begin later this year, with deployment planned for long-haul freight, dedicated-route logistics, and port transportation5.

The bill-of-materials cost of the truck's autonomous driving kit has been cut 70% compared with the previous generation, and per-tonne-kilometre transport costs are projected to fall 30%6. Energy consumption is expected to drop 10% against conventional trucks, aided by a drag coefficient of 0.4 and Pony.ai's energy-efficiency algorithms.

Sensor stack and redundancy

The autonomous driving kit comprises nine lidars, three millimetre-wave radars, and 13 cameras, providing 360-degree sensing coverage. The chassis features fully redundant architectures across steering, braking, communications, power supply, computing, and sensing. The vehicle uses the same domain controller deployed in Pony.ai's seventh-generation Robotaxis, applying what the company calls its Virtual Driver technology across both its robotaxi and trucking fleets.

Five months from agreement to debut

Pony.ai and GAC Commercial Vehicle signed a strategic cooperation agreement on April 16, 2026. The two companies completed vehicle testing and validation within five months ahead of the IAA debut. Automotive World noted that the five-month gap from cooperation deal to show-floor unveiling is a data point on how fast autonomous trucking timelines can move.

International expansion plans

Pony.ai plans to enter the European and Middle Eastern robotruck markets within two years7. The company is arranging European road tests and engaging with governments, ports, and shippers about controlled environments where testing approvals and safety management are more straightforward. Pony.ai already operates robotaxi services in six international markets: Singapore, South Korea, the UAE, Qatar, Croatia, and Luxembourg.

The European push follows recent momentum for the company on the continent. Pony.ai and Verne began carrying invited passengers with no safety operator in the driver's seat on public roads in Zagreb on September 10, marking the first fully driverless robotaxi rides in Europe[1]. Uber, Pony.ai, and Verne had launched autonomous rides in Zagreb on August 20, making it the first European city where riders could book a self-driving vehicle through the Uber app[3].

Pony.ai, founded in 2016, has been developing robotrucks since 2018 and has built a portfolio spanning heavy- and light-duty trucks. The company claims it already runs a couple hundred Level 4 trucks on fixed routes in China, some fully driverless and some with a human safety driver.

ANALYSIS The 70% ADK cost reduction is the commercial headline: autonomous trucking economics have historically been constrained by sensor-stack expense, and a cut of that magnitude, if sustained at volume, would materially change the unit-economics case for fleet operators evaluating L4 adoption.
