Spotify weighs $4–$5 monthly add-on for AI covers and remixes tool, eyes Q1 2027

Paying Spotify subscribers could rework opted-in artists' tracks with AI for an extra monthly fee, with royalties flowing back to original rights holders.

Spotify is targeting a first-quarter 2027 launch for an AI-powered tool that would let paying subscribers create their own remixes and covers of songs, according to a Financial Times report citing people familiar with the plans1,3.

The company is weighing a price of $4 to $5 per month on top of existing subscription fees, one of those people told the FT4. Neither the timing nor the pricing has been finalized, the FT's sources cautioned, and Spotify declined to comment.

The product would allow subscribers to use AI to rework tracks by artists who have opted in — for example, turning a folk song into a dance track or generating a version that sounds as if a different artist is covering it. Royalties generated by fan-made remixes would flow to the artists behind the original songs. Spotify is also building a mechanism for remixes to appear in playlists, with plays credited to the original tracks on its charts.

The product could be unveiled around the Grammy Awards on February 7, 2027, according to the report.

Spotify has so far signed licensing deals for the tool with Universal Music Group, Merlin, Kobalt, and Believe. The Techmeme summary described the launch as pending further licensing agreements.

ANALYSIS The opt-in structure and royalty pass-through to original rights holders represent an attempt to position the feature as additive to artist revenue rather than a substitute — a design choice that may have facilitated the label and distributor deals already in place.

Spotify previously disclosed a collaboration with Nvidia to integrate TensorRT-LLM into its generative recommendation inference pipeline[2].

ANALYSIS The AI remix tool would mark a more consumer-facing application of generative AI on the platform, moving beyond backend recommendation infrastructure into a paid creative feature.
