TSMC hits record August revenue as AI chip demand drives 53% surge

TSMC reported record August revenue of $16.35 billion, up 53.3% year over year, driven by sustained AI chip demand and a 72.5% global foundry market share.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. posted record monthly revenue for August, reporting NT$514.8 billion ($16.35 billion), up 53.3% year over year and 10.1% from July1. Bloomberg characterized the result as AI chip demand outstripping supply2.

The figure marks the fourth consecutive month of rising revenue for the world's largest contract chipmaker.

TSMC attributed the momentum to sustained demand for chips used in artificial intelligence applications. During its second-quarter earnings call in July, the company said AI-related demand continued to be "extremely robust".

That quarter delivered a more than 77% year-on-year jump in profit, and TSMC guided third-quarter revenue to between $44.6 billion and $45.8 billion.

TSMC held a 72.5% share of the global foundry market in the second quarter, according to data released by TrendForce. Samsung Foundry ranked second at 5.9%, followed by China's SMIC at 5.4%. The world's top 10 foundries posted record combined revenue of nearly $53.49 billion in the second quarter.

TSMC and ASML announced an initiative to advance the industry's transition to next-generation chipmaking technology, with TSMC planning to use ASML's High NA technology in large-scale manufacturing for advanced nodes starting in 2030.

TSMC shares closed 0.61% lower on Thursday ahead of the revenue release.

ANALYSIS The 53% year-over-year surge, combined with a fourth straight month of sequential gains, indicates that AI-driven semiconductor demand is translating directly into sustained top-line growth at the foundry level rather than a one-quarter spike. TSMC's 72.5% foundry market share means the bulk of that demand flows through a single manufacturer, a concentration that the ASML High NA partnership is positioned to extend into the next process-node generation.
