A driverless Waymo vehicle drove through the South Pearl Farmers Market in Denver on a Sunday morning as vendors were setting up, navigating between tents on a path intended for pedestrians1.
Hearth Denver, a bakery and coffee shop that participates in the market, posted video of the incident to social media with the caption "Waymo babe this is a farmers market". The footage shows the Waymo-branded car moving along the vendor path with its turn signal on, at one point turning toward people standing near tents before stopping. Onlookers stared and threw up their arms.
No injuries, no damage
Farmers Market and Event Coordinator Marilyn Kahlich said the vehicle "was traveling the correct flow of vendor setup and went slowly, avoiding all obstacles". "No one was hurt, there wasn't any damage, no one felt in danger," Kahlich said. Organizers, however, did not know how to stop or redirect the vehicle.
Waymo said the autonomous car was already navigating to a destination on South Pearl Street when the farmers market setup began on Sunday, and that the vehicle "quickly identified the situation and maneuvered out of the market area".
