Anthropic on November 5 launched Personal Finance in Claude, a beta feature that lets users connect bank and credit card accounts through Plaid and query their financial data in natural language1,2. The tool provides read-only access — it cannot move, manage, or invest money4.
Personal Finance starts rolling out on Claude's Pro, Max, and Ultra plans in the United States.
Users sign in to their bank through Plaid, a third-party service that connects apps to financial institutions3. Claude does not ask for or see bank passwords; authentication and access approval happen entirely within Plaid's flow. Once accounts are linked, users can ask questions such as where their money went in a given month, and Claude categorizes spending across connected accounts — sorting by buckets like rent and utilities, food and drink, and shopping.
Claude can also compare current spending to previous months, flag upcoming payments, and calculate remaining balances before payday. Anthropic said Claude explains financial terms in everyday language and noted that Personal Finance carries no ads, sponsored recommendations, or affiliated financial products.
Anthropic added a disclaimer: Claude can make mistakes in its answers, and users should verify important figures with their bank.
The launch follows OpenAI's ChatGPT Finances, which introduced similar account-linking and spending-analysis capabilities in May. TechCrunch characterized the move as Claude playing catch-up to ChatGPT, which already lets users connect financial accounts and ask about spending patterns and long-term financial planning.
ANALYSIS By matching ChatGPT Finances feature-for-feature — read-only access, Plaid integration, natural-language queries — Anthropic narrows a product gap that has existed since May, though the beta rollout limited to paid US plans constrains its initial reach relative to OpenAI's broader availability.
