That surge is no longer theoretical: Unitree, China's best-known humanoid robot maker, became the first such company to list on China's A-share market, and its shares soared in their Shanghai trading debut. The VDMA called on Germany and Europe to "step up and create resilient domestic supply chains for sourcing critical parts". A humanoid robot that "can be dropped into an unfamiliar environment — including a home — and complete around 80 percent of tasks" would mark the "ChatGPT moment" for the sector, he said, estimating the milestone could arrive in two to three years under ideal conditions2. Wang defined the threshold precisely: robots completing roughly 80 percent of tasks across 80 percent of unfamiliar settings, guided only by voice or text instructions.
Yet Wang was candid about the gap between market excitement and technical readiness. Unitree has deployed robots on automotive production lines and trialed them at its own factories, but has held off on large-scale rollout because "overall efficiency and generalization capability remain insufficient". He called the unresolved residual error in robot grasping "the biggest bottleneck facing embodied AI worldwide" and said the core challenge is aligning the inputs and outputs of large AI models with physical robots.
ANALYSIS Wang's honesty about technical limitations sits in tension with the market's euphoria — Unitree's shares closed up 460.34 percent on their first day of trading. The VDMA, meanwhile, identified scaling as the "crucial challenge" in humanoid robotics. Both the Chinese entrepreneur and the German lobby thus agree on the bottleneck — generalization and scale — but they approach it from opposite positions: Unitree with 19,100-unit-class shipment volumes already flowing through the sector, and Europe without a comparable platform company.
