China's Unitree Robotics based designs for its most successful robot dogs on innovations funded by the U.S. military, according to a former U.S. defense technology official and three top researchers involved in the original projects2,9,11.
The Reuters investigation, published on August 18, 2026, traces how breakthroughs in quadruped movement financed by the U.S. DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and other military programs migrated into Unitree's commercial product line13. Ben Katz, who worked at MIT's Biomimetic Robotics Lab, told Reuters the dimensions of Unitree's popular Go series were "to the millimeter" almost identical to the Mini Cheetah robot he helped develop. Gavin Kenneally, a former University of Pennsylvania researcher, said the Army-funded project became "basically, the first Unitree robot that had any kind of scale".
The underlying research was conducted through the Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance (RCTA), funded by the U.S. Army from 2010 to 20208. The alliance included researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, MIT, Boston Dynamics, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and other institutions, with General Dynamics Land Systems as its top commercial partner4. In 2016, University of Pennsylvania researchers eliminated heavy central gearboxes and placed motors directly in robots' legs, improving terrain response. In 2019, MIT unveiled the Mini Cheetah, capable of performing backflips.
Katz said that within six months of publishing his MIT master's thesis detailing the Mini Cheetah's actuators, Chinese companies were manufacturing copies available on AliExpress. Unitree was founded by Wang Xingxing, who in his 2016 master's thesis from Shanghai University cited MIT work and acknowledged the lab's pioneering contributions. Unitree says on its website that it independently developed the motors, reducers, controllers, and some sensors of its quadruped robots.
Unitree's $1,600 Go2 model, launched in 2023, helped the company dominate the global quadruped robot market. The company sold more than 18,000 quadruped robots and 5,500 humanoid robots last year, according to company filings, and was valued at about $9 billion ahead of its Shanghai stock market debut. Chinese state television has featured Unitree robots alongside People's Liberation Army troops, including a modified B1-series robot firing a mounted assault rifle.
The U.S. side of the story centers on Ghost Robotics, founded by Kenneally to commercialize the same Army-funded breakthroughs. Ghost Robotics has shipped about 1,000 of its Vision 60 robots, mostly to military and government customers, with its first customer being Navy Special Warfare Command. The Vision 60 sells for upwards of $165,000, compared with Unitree's B-series listed below $100,000 in the United States. In 2024, South Korea's LIG Defense & Aerospace acquired a 60% stake in Ghost Robotics for $240 million.
Regulatory responses have escalated. In June 2026, the Pentagon added Unitree to a list of Chinese military companies, designating it a contributor to China's defense industrial base. In July, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission banned imports of future models of foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots, including Unitree products. In September 2023, the U.S. Army had secured a federal waiver to purchase two Unitree Go2s, with procurement records describing them as crucial tools given insufficient commercial quantities of U.S.-produced alternatives.
Boston Dynamics argued in a Congressional hearing that China's low pricing would drive U.S. firms out of the market. ARL spokesperson Amanda Ligon said the research "strengthened the broader U.S. robotics ecosystem and informed subsequent work across government and the private sector".
ANALYSIS The Unitree case illustrates a specific failure mode in the U.S. defense-research pipeline: publicly funded breakthroughs published in open academic channels were reproduced and scaled commercially abroad before domestic firms could bring equivalent products to market at competitive price points.
