Google's Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the 14th Google product to reach that threshold and the fastest to do so, CEO Sundar Pichai announced on August 111,2,3.
The milestone specifically measures users who opened the Gemini app or visited the Gemini web interface to enter a prompt or access Gemini Live within the past month. It does not count users who encounter Gemini-powered features embedded across other Google products such as Gmail, Drive, or Search.
The announcement was detailed in a blog post by Josh Woodward, vice president of Google Labs, Gemini and AI Studio. Pichai also shared the news via X.
Gemini's 1 billion MAU figure arrives roughly two months after OpenAI's ChatGPT reached the same mark in June. ANALYSIS The close timing places the two leading consumer AI chatbots at comparable scale by the MAU metric, though the composition and engagement depth of each user base remain distinct questions.
Google disclosed several usage details alongside the milestone. Sixty-three percent of Gemini users interact with the assistant via voice. The platform now generates more than 150 million images per day. On the platform side, Google said Gemini has more than 100 million active users on iOS.
The company's most recent Q2 2026 earnings call had already signaled momentum, with Google reporting over 950 million monthly users at that time and daily active users tripling over the past year. ANALYSIS The jump from 950 million to 1 billion in the weeks since the earnings call suggests continued acceleration rather than a plateau.
Alongside the user milestone, Google continued rolling out new models and features, including Gemini 3.5 Flash, which the company says is designed to improve coding and autonomous AI-agent tasks.
Gemini's integration footprint extends well beyond the standalone app. The AI powers email organization in Gmail and document summarization in Drive. It is also core to Google's search experience through AI Mode and AI Overviews. Google's AI Mode in Search has itself achieved over 1 billion monthly active users globally, though that figure is separate from the app-specific metric announced today.
ANALYSIS By drawing a clear boundary around app-and-web-interface usage — excluding the billions of passive Gemini encounters across Search, Gmail, and Drive — Google is presenting a metric that more directly compares to ChatGPT's standalone product. The distinction matters: it frames Gemini's growth as a function of intentional user engagement rather than ambient distribution across Google's ecosystem.
