Google is testing a feature called Call for Me that lets Gemini place phone calls to businesses on a user's behalf, handling tasks from navigating hold queues to conducting full conversations with staff1,2.
The feature is rolling out as an "early experiment" to Pixel 11 owners in the U.S. who pay for a Gemini subscription and use the beta version of Google's Phone app for Android. Rather than dialing a business directly, a user tells Gemini to call on their behalf through the Gemini app.
Google says Gemini can call a business, introduce itself, navigate automated phone menus, wait on hold, and then carry on the conversation with the person who answers. Supported tasks include making a restaurant reservation, checking whether a product is in stock, rescheduling an appointment, and placing items on hold.
Users retain control throughout: a live transcript displays the call in real time, and the user can take over at any point. Call for Me uses the owner's personal phone number, dialing directly from the device.
Google says the agent can share personal information that the user approves as part of the call, which the company says allows it to take a broader set of actions than prior AI-calling features.
The launch follows years of Google experiments with AI-assisted automated calling technology. Meta's Muse and Instinct agents can already make calls on users' behalf, placing Call for Me in a growing field of voice-capable AI agents3.
ANALYSIS By gating Call for Me behind both a Pixel 11 purchase and a paid Gemini subscription, Google ties its most visible agentic capability to its hardware and subscription revenue lines simultaneously. The requirement for the beta Phone app underscores the feature's experimental status and limits its initial reach.
