Intuitive launched its latest-generation da Vinci 5 robotic-assisted surgical system in India on September 19, positioning the AI- and sensor-laden platform as the foundation for remote telesurgery the company expects to begin introducing globally around late 2027 or early 20282,3.

The system packs 10,000 times more computing power than its predecessor, the da Vinci Xi, and carries more than 150 design enhancements. Among them is Force Feedback, a first-of-its-kind capability that lets surgeons at the console sense the push and pull forces they apply to tissue. The platform also delivers improved 3D imaging described as the most realistic da Vinci vision system to date, a more ergonomic surgeon console, and dynamic assistance that automates select tasks.

AI capabilities and supervised autonomy

Beyond the hardware upgrades, Intuitive is developing real-time anatomical identification, intraoperative guidance, and elements of supervised autonomy as software layers for da Vinci 5. The company is also building telesurgery as a software-enabled capability on the same platform. Intuitive has already conducted telesurgery simulations across thousands of miles, including between Europe and the United States.

The initial telesurgery model does not envision a doctor remotely conducting an entire operation without a surgeon beside the patient. Instead, Intuitive describes a scenario in which an expert surgeon in a large city remotely joins a procedure being performed roughly 1,000 kilometres away and takes control during the more complex segments of the operation. India is among the company's priority markets for the capability, though deployment will require regulatory approval.

India's installed base

India already has more than 275 da Vinci systems and 2,000 trained robotic surgeons, with over 200,000 da Vinci procedures performed to date. Da Vinci 5 is cleared for use in India across urologic, gynaecologic, general surgery, cardiac, and thoracoscopic procedures. The initial rollout will be focused: selected hospitals and programs will build experience with the platform to support what Intuitive called responsible adoption across the country's growing robotic-surgery community.

Globally, da Vinci 5 has been used by more than 15,000 surgeons, and Intuitive cites more than 50,000 peer-reviewed publications related to its technologies.

ANALYSIS The telesurgery roadmap ties the da Vinci 5 hardware refresh directly to a software-defined future: the 10,000x computing-power increase and new sensor suite are preconditions for the real-time anatomical identification and remote-control capabilities Intuitive is layering on top. India's large installed base and trained surgeon pool make it a logical early market once regulatory clearance is secured.
