NVIDIA has struck a strategic investment and compute deal with Safe Superintelligence, the frontier AI lab founded in 2024 by former OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and Daniel Levy1. The partnership pairs an equity investment with long-term access to NVIDIA's next-generation Vera Rubin computing platform2.

Neither company disclosed the size of the investment, but people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg it is worth around $5B, which would make it one of NVIDIA's largest single bets on a frontier AI lab. SSI said the deal will increase its compute capacity by an order of magnitude.

NVIDIA sought the partnership after gaining rare access to SSI's closely guarded research program, according to Tech Funding News. "Ilya has pioneered fundamental breakthroughs at the foundation of modern AI. We're excited to see what new breakthroughs SSI will discover powered by our Vera Rubin platform," said Jensen Huang, founder and chief executive of NVIDIA.

SSI has previously raised $3B across two rounds, most recently $2B at a $32B valuation. The NVIDIA deal would represent a substantial step up in the lab's financial backing and compute access.

The deal follows a pattern in NVIDIA's investment strategy. Tech Funding News reports that NVIDIA has committed more than $40B to AI equity investments in the first four months of 2026 alone. That tally includes a reported $30B stake in OpenAI and a $10B investment in Anthropic. PitchBook data cited by Tech Funding News puts NVIDIA's total at roughly $53B across 170 deals since 2020.

The structure — NVIDIA invests in an AI lab, the lab receives priority access to NVIDIA's newest chips, and NVIDIA's hardware roadmap benefits from the research relationship — is one critics have called circular financing. Bloomberg reported on July 27, 2026 that NVIDIA is negotiating a separate financing package with OpenAI that could exceed $600B, reviving scrutiny of that playbook.

CoreWeave, another NVIDIA-linked infrastructure company, has a $6.3B agreement with NVIDIA to buy back its unused compute capacity through 2032.

ANALYSIS The reported ~$5B investment would rank among the largest single commitments NVIDIA has made to a frontier lab, trailing the reported OpenAI and Anthropic stakes but dwarfing typical venture rounds. For SSI, a lab that has operated with a small team and limited public output, an order-of-magnitude increase in compute access materially changes its capacity to train large-scale models.

The deal extends NVIDIA's strategy of converting its cash position — supported by close to $200B in annual revenue and a market capitalization above $5T, per Tech Funding News — into equity stakes that simultaneously lock in demand for its next-generation hardware. Each investment creates a customer committed to purchasing NVIDIA silicon, a dynamic that has drawn the "circular financing" label.

Safe Superintelligence describes itself as a frontier lab trying to develop safe and ethically aligned artificial superintelligence for the benefit of humanity.
