OpenAI on September 23 opened ChatGPT Voice on mobile to its GPT-6 model family and connected it to agentic workflows, bridging a gap between the desktop and phone experiences for its paid subscribers1,2.
ChatGPT Voice can now be powered by GPT-6 Astra, Sol, and Luna, and can invoke plugins including email, calendar, and Slack. The update also brings ChatGPT Work to mobile, letting users create documents, presentations, sites, and spreadsheets or operate a cloud browser by voice.
Plus and Pro subscribers gain full access to the Work tab on mobile, where they can draft emails, summarize Slack messages, build sites, create presentations, use the cloud browser, and access areas such as finances inside ChatGPT. Free and Go tier users receive a narrower slice: plugin access and connected-app integrations.
Voice conversations will also produce richer text output, and users can switch between text and voice within a session. OpenAI is positioning the mobile update around continuity: a conversation started on a phone can be resumed on desktop.
The mobile rollout follows a sequence of desktop-first launches. In July, OpenAI released GPT-Live, its conversational model, and later integrated it with the desktop app so users could complete tasks in the Work tab or build apps in the Codex tab by voice. The new update extends those capabilities to the phone.
Anthropic has also moved to tighten its mobile-desktop handoff and merged its Cowork and Chat interfaces. OpenAI, however, is keeping chat and Work as separate surfaces.
