OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT advertising to 26 additional countries, bringing the platform's total ad footprint to 89 markets, the company said on October 212. The advertiser base has grown to more than 100,000, up from 20,000 in August1.
The new markets span Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Following earlier launches in Mexico and Brazil, OpenAI is adding 14 more Latin American countries including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru. Additional markets include Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
In August, OpenAI said the ad business had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate3. The company is broadening ad revenue ahead of a potential IPO, according to Finimize. OpenAI has framed advertising as a way to help cover its AI infrastructure costs.
Advertisers in the new countries can purchase placements through ad-technology partners or through self-service access in OpenAI's Ads Manager. The self-serve channel reduces the need for a large sales force and lowers the barrier for small and midsized businesses.
Ads appear only on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscriptions remain ad-free. OpenAI said advertising helps support free and low-cost access to ChatGPT globally.
ANALYSIS The fivefold increase in advertisers over roughly two months, combined with geographic expansion across emerging markets, points to an ad operation scaling rapidly beyond its initial US testing phase. Keeping paid tiers ad-free preserves upgrade incentives while monetizing the much larger free user base. OpenAI's recent moves to distribute its models across all three major US cloud platforms add further commercial surface area[3].
