Shopify opens billion-listing catalog to any AI agent via MCP

Shopify on October 13 opened its product catalog of more than one billion listings to external AI agents, letting shoppers configure any compatible agent to search, build carts, and complete purchases without a dedicated partnership integration1,2.

The move extends a capability that previously required a bespoke deal. In September, Shopify partnered with Meta to let its MUSE agent browse and buy items on a user's behalf. The new release removes that exclusivity: any developer can connect a compatible agent through Shop MCP, an interface built on the Model Context Protocol.

Shoppers link an AI agent to their account on Shop, Shopify's order-management and product-discovery app. They can set conditions such as budget limits or delivery speed, and the agent searches the catalog and recommends matching products. Payment occurs inside the agent conversation using Shop Pay for Shopify-hosted stores; purchases on external shopping sites require a separate approval step. The AI cannot complete a purchase autonomously — users must review and approve the amount and payment method before checkout. Orders placed through agents are funneled back to the Shop app for tracking.

Shopify's catalog spans both its own merchants' storefronts and items listed on external online stores.

ANALYSIS By exposing its catalog through an open protocol rather than gating access behind bilateral deals, Shopify is positioning its checkout and fulfillment rails as shared infrastructure for the emerging layer of AI-mediated commerce, lowering the barrier for smaller agent developers to plug in.
