Tesla brings Cybercab robotaxi to Tokyo for first Japan showing

Tesla displayed its Cybercab autonomous robotaxi in Tokyo's Aoyama district on September 11, the purpose-built driverless vehicle's first public showing in Japan1,2.

The two-seat Cybercab has no steering wheel, accelerator, or brake pedals and is designed to operate entirely without a driver. The vehicle uses eight cameras to monitor its surroundings and navigate roads, and features butterfly-wing doors, a large interior touchscreen, and a spacious trunk.

Tesla has already begun producing the Cybercab and has introduced robotaxi services in parts of the United States. The company currently has no plans to sell the vehicle in Japan. The head of Tesla's Japanese division said the company would like to launch a self-driving taxi service in Japan if the necessary conditions and regulations are in place.

The Cybercab exhibition will move to Osaka from September 18 and to Nagoya from September 22.

The Tokyo showing follows Tesla's placement of driverless Cybercab vehicles on public streets in Austin on September 3, ahead of an invite-only launch event the following day[2]. The Japan display extends the vehicle's international visibility but remains a static exhibition rather than an operational deployment.

ANALYSIS The regulatory caveat from Tesla's Japan division points to a gap between the vehicle's hardware readiness and the legal framework required for commercial autonomous ride-hailing in Japan. Tesla is running live robotaxi rides in parts of the United States while its Japan presence remains limited to exhibition tours.
