Tesla is constructing Supercharger stations exclusively for its autonomous ride-hailing fleet, separating robotaxi charging infrastructure from the public network for the first time1,3,4.
Max de Zegher, who runs Tesla's North American Charging unit, confirmed the dedicated buildout. "They're plugged in manually, but that's just for now," de Zegher said of the current arrangement, in which human operators plug driverless cabs into public Superchargers overnight. He did not specify how the vehicles would eventually connect themselves.
Austin's emerging depot network
Permit filings uncovered by Supercharger tracker MarcoRPi1 on X show Tesla has submitted plans for a second robotaxi-only charging depot in Austin, at 2323 Ridgepoint Drive, an existing Tesla sales, delivery, and service location in northeast Austin2. The project drawing folder is labeled "2323 Ridgepoint Dr – Robotaxi". The site plan calls for three V4 Supercharger cabinets feeding 24 V4 posts, powered by a 2,500 kVA utility transformer and a 4,000-amp switchboard, repurposing roughly 29 to 32 existing parking spaces behind the facility.
The Ridgepoint filing is the second commercial charging depot Tesla has submitted in the Austin area recently. Earlier plans surfaced for a separate hub along East St. Elmo Road featuring 80 wireless chargers and 48 V4 stalls. The St. Elmo location covers Austin's south side while Ridgepoint anchors the northeast corridor. Tesla also received City Council approval for a robotaxi hub whose site shifted north6.
The Ridgepoint drawings show no wireless charging equipment. ANALYSIS The plug-in-only layout at Ridgepoint contrasts with the wireless pads planned for St. Elmo, suggesting Tesla is hedging across charging technologies as it scales fleet infrastructure.
Wireless charging and the Cybercab gap
Tesla said in 2024 that the Cybercab would support only wireless charging. A video released in October 2024 showed a Cybercab wirelessly charging at up to 25 kilowatts against a 48 kilowatt-hour battery, a capacity figure documented in filings with the Environmental Protection Agency. Current production Cybercab units, however, still carry a hidden NACS port on the rear bumper, and standard Model Y robotaxis in the fleet rely on standard plugs. Public Superchargers do not offer wireless pads.
Tesla has not delivered the robotic charging arm it demonstrated a decade ago.
The dedicated sites will go where demand is high and land is cheap. At public stations, Tesla says cars carrying passengers have charging priority, and the company aims for back-to-back sessions to keep site utilization high. Tesla dispatches robotaxis to chargers using the same Trip Planner system that powers navigation in its consumer vehicles.
Earlier filings indicated that Tesla robotaxi hubs are adding automated car-cleaning robots to vacuum floors, sanitize surfaces, and wipe down windows between passenger drop-offs.
ANALYSIS The permit cadence in Austin points to a fleet-support buildout running in parallel with the ride-hailing launch rather than trailing it. The mix of plug-in and wireless depot designs reflects the transitional state of the Cybercab's own charging hardware.
