Tesla delays unsupervised FSD to Q2 2027, limits it to Robotaxi zones

Tesla pushed unsupervised Full Self-Driving in customer cars to Q2 2027, limiting it to existing Robotaxi geofenced zones in six U.S. metro areas.

Tesla has pushed unsupervised Full Self-Driving in customer-owned vehicles to Q2 2027, and the feature will operate only inside the geofenced zones where Tesla already runs its Robotaxi service2,3,5.

Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's vice president of AI, laid out the timeline on the company's Q3 2026 earnings call on October 21, 2026, framing the first step not as a software update that lets owners ride hands-free anywhere, but as owners adding their cars to Tesla's managed Robotaxi fleet. The question on unsupervised FSD timing was one of the top retail shareholder submissions, backed by about 1.1 million shares4.

Small zones, narrow operations

Tesla's Robotaxi service currently runs in six U.S. metropolitan areas, with service zones covering only portions of those cities. In Miami, the zone covers mainly West Miami and a strip toward Doral and Sweetwater. Tesla launched limited geofenced zones in Orlando and Tampa in July. Inside those zones, the Robotaxi service sticks to low-speed routes, largely stays off highways, and avoids harder parts of town. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the service is not fully driverless because California rules require a safety driver in every vehicle.

By the end of Q3 2026, Tesla said its Robotaxi fleet had traveled nearly 2 million cumulative unsupervised miles. Third-party tracking this spring showed the number of fully driverless Teslas on the road was in the dozens.

FSD 15 and the software stack

Elluswamy said FSD 15 will ship to customer vehicles as the same software stack running the Robotaxi fleet1. The update introduces proprietary Tesla-built maps with an entirely new architecture that learns and remembers individual user preferences. That mapping technology will first apply to trip start and end points with FSD 15, then expand to cover the entire journey. FSD 15 is expected to reach customers in late 2026.

Elluswamy expressed confidence in Tesla's competitive position, stating that once unsupervised FSD reaches the customer fleet, "I don't think anyone can match it for several years". He also said safety is the bottleneck for the unsupervised FSD timeline and estimated that Tesla's safety issues would be fixed by next year.

Hardware and eligibility gaps

Owners of vehicles with the Hardware 3 computer who purchased FSD have been told their hardware cannot support unsupervised driving, and Tesla has not announced a clear upgrade plan. Tesla has stated AI4 is sufficient to run FSD 15 and support unsupervised driving. Fleet participation will almost certainly require an active FSD subscription or purchased FSD capability.

The Q2 2027 target is the latest in a series of revised promises. Elon Musk told investors in July 2025 that unsupervised FSD would be available for personal use by the end of 2026 in certain geographies. A year before that, Musk said he would be surprised if Tesla did not have unsupervised self-driving the following year. Tesla's CFO, Vaibhav Taneja, said autonomy will be a significant part of Tesla's revenue and profitability in 2027.

ANALYSIS The practical scope of the Q2 2027 commitment is narrower than the headline date suggests: customer vehicles would operate unsupervised only within Tesla's existing Robotaxi geofences, which today cover small slices of six metro areas, not the nationwide autonomy Tesla has marketed for years.

Tesla said a Dallas Cybercab public launch is planned for November 2026.
