Tesla plans to wind down Cybertruck production at its Gigafactory Texas in Austin around the middle of next year to free capacity for increased Cybercab robotaxi production, CEO Elon Musk said in a post on X on November 62,3,9.

Musk did not specify whether Cybertruck manufacturing would move to another facility or be discontinued entirely7. The Austin plant is the only known Tesla site equipped to build the Cybertruck's specialized components10.

Cybertruck's trajectory

The Cybertruck launched in 2023 after years of delays and initially amassed over 1 million reservations, with Musk predicting Tesla could sell at least 250,000 units annually. Actual sales fell well short: Tesla does not break out individual Cybertruck figures, but the highest analyst estimates place total deliveries at roughly 70,000 since launch. The vehicle faced multiple recalls, quality-control issues, and repeated price adjustments5.

Tesla's broader Other Models delivery category, which includes the Cybertruck, recorded 8,295 deliveries in Q3 2026, down from 12,364 in the prior quarter.

Musk described the planned wind-down as the "end of an era" while adding that the "Cybertruck fleet will be around for a long time".

Cybercab and the autonomy bet

The Cybercab is central to Tesla's robotaxi ambitions. Tesla plans to make the Cybercab the main driverless vehicle model operating within its larger robotaxi network. The company targets small-batch Cybercab deliveries by the end of this year, though U.S. regulators are investigating its lack of manual controls.

Musk did not say whether the production shift would affect jobs at the Austin plant. Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. CBS Austin also reported reaching out to Tesla for more information without an immediate response.

Tesla shares were up slightly in premarket trading on November 6, following a period of steep declines. Combined market value of Tesla and SpaceX had shed more than $420 billion since the prior Tuesday's close, according to one tally.

ANALYSIS The production swap trades a low-volume consumer vehicle for the hardware Tesla needs to scale its autonomous ride-hailing service, concentrating the Austin factory's output on the business Musk has staked Tesla's valuation narrative on.
