Tesla's Robotaxi service now operates from 6 AM to 2 AM, creating a 20-hour daily service window that leaves just four hours before round-the-clock availability1,3.
The update, posted on October 30 by Tesla's official Robotaxi account, marks the third extension this month. Tesla first pushed its closing time from 11 PM to midnight on October 17, then extended to 1 AM the following week, and has now added another hour to reach 2 AM. Tesla did not specify which markets receive the extended hours.
Nighttime detection and scaling
Elon Musk said on October 3 that one of the biggest challenges with extending nighttime hours was avoiding animals, citing grey kittens on grey pavement as particularly difficult to detect in the dark. The pace of extensions since that comment — 11 PM to 2 AM within roughly four weeks — suggests the perception problem has been addressed, at least enough to widen the operating window. Musk commented separately that the Cybercab "is scaling"2.
Tesla's support page notes that availability can vary by area, and the extended hours may be limited to the Cybercab, which runs more powerful Full Self-Driving (FSD) hardware.
New rider features
Alongside the hours expansion, Tesla added several in-ride features. A new Calm Mode dims the screen, removes FSD visualizations from the display, and adjusts cabin lighting. Riders can now view a rear-facing camera feed during their trip and share trip details with a contact. The iOS app received a redesigned Live Activity experience.
Grok, the AI assistant, is now available on Model Y Robotaxi vehicles. Tesla's Robotaxi account indicated that Grok was already available in the Cybercab.
Accessibility improvements include an updated vehicle-locating arrow in the app, haptic feedback to help passengers find their ride, and music controls accessible through a screen reader.
Musk also indicated that beach access is planned for the Miami and Tampa service areas, though no timeline was given.
ANALYSIS The rapid cadence of nighttime extensions — three in roughly two weeks — points to iterative confidence-building in the FSD stack's low-light performance rather than a single breakthrough. Deploying Grok inside Model Y vehicles extends the assistant beyond the purpose-built Cybercab, broadening the AI touchpoint across Tesla's Robotaxi fleet.
