Waymo, Tesla, Zoox robotaxis jam same Austin block as fleets crowd Texas

A viral video posted on October 25 shows a Waymo robotaxi navigating around a stopped Tesla Cybercab on an Austin street, only to encounter a Zoox vehicle blocking its path, creating a three-way autonomous-vehicle traffic jam that underscores the city's rapidly crowding self-driving landscape1,2.

"This is a perfect storm. They don't know what to do," an observer said in the video as another vehicle blared its horn.

The numbers behind the scene are substantial. Waymo, owned by Alphabet Inc., has more than 1,200 vehicles registered in Texas. Tesla has 970 vehicles in the state. Amazon's Zoox has more than a dozen purpose-built robotaxis registered in Texas ahead of its upcoming service launch. Texas has become a hotbed for robotaxi operations amid a relatively hands-off regulatory climate.

None of the three companies immediately responded to comment requests on Monday afternoon, per the Austin American-Statesman's reporting.

ANALYSIS The three-way encounter on a single Austin block is a concrete illustration of what happens when multiple autonomous fleets scale simultaneously in a permissive regulatory environment: the vehicles must now negotiate not just human traffic but each other's driving logic, a coordination problem that grows with fleet size.
