WeRide announced on August 3 a strategic partnership with Danish electric mobility operator GreenMobility to develop Denmark's first commercial autonomous ride-hailing service, marking the Chinese autonomous driving company's entry into the Nordic market6,8,4.
Subject to regulatory approval, the partners plan to launch a public robotaxi service in the first half of 2027 using WeRide's latest-generation L4 Robotaxi GXR, a fully autonomous vehicle designed to comply with European Union regulations2,3,12. The commercial launch has not yet taken place.
Denmark becomes WeRide's sixth European market. The company previously announced launches in Madrid and Zurich in June 2026 and expanded into Spain and Slovakia earlier this year, adding to autonomous driving deployments in France, Belgium, and Switzerland. WeRide's European activities are currently focused on testing and pilot programmes, though it already operates commercial autonomous driving services in China and the United Arab Emirates.
GreenMobility operates the Nordic region's largest free-floating car-sharing network, with a fleet of more than 1,500 electric vehicles. The partnership combines WeRide's Level 4 autonomous driving technology with GreenMobility's shared-mobility operations. WeRide and GreenMobility will work with the Danish Road Directorate and the Danish Road Traffic Authority on testing and deployment in line with Danish and EU regulations.
WeRide Founder and CEO Tony Han described the collaboration as another milestone in the company's European expansion strategy. The company said Denmark's robust digital infrastructure and high electric vehicle adoption rates create favorable conditions for autonomous operations9. The initiative follows what WeRide calls an "asset-light" global expansion strategy, pairing its autonomous driving technology with local operators' fleets and user bases.
WeRide currently operates across 13 countries and more than 40 cities, holds autonomous driving permits in eight nations, and maintains a Level 4 fleet of over 3,000 vehicles.
The Denmark partnership arrives amid a broader push by Chinese autonomous driving companies into Europe. Rival Pony.ai said in March it would partner with Uber Technologies and Croatian autonomous mobility startup Verne to launch what the companies described as Europe's first commercial robotaxi service. Baidu's Apollo Go unit and Lyft-owned taxi application Freenow began road tests in London in late July. Momenta has secured permits to conduct autonomous driving tests on urban roads across Germany.
Europe has emerged as a key growth market for China's autonomous driving companies following an earlier push into the Gulf region, as they seek to commercialize their technology beyond their home market amid intensifying competition and regulatory scrutiny, according to Reuters.
