Anthropic announced on Thursday that Claude's voice mode now supports its full model lineup — Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku — and can interact with third-party applications including Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion1,2,3.
The update marks a significant expansion from the original voice mode, which launched last year powered exclusively by the Haiku model and was limited to quick responses rather than complex tasks. Under the new system, voice mode defaults to the fastest version of whichever model the user last selected in text chat.
The third-party app integrations allow users to perform actions such as updating a meeting slot, drafting an email, or creating a document in Notion directly through voice commands. TechCrunch noted that this capability distinguishes Claude's voice mode from OpenAI's, which recently updated its conversational style but does not yet support tool use during voice interactions.
Anthropic said the upgraded voice mode can handle longer conversations and outlined use cases including providing feedback on communication style, rehearsing a client pitch, and brainstorming product market research.
The company did not make changes to the underlying voice model itself with this release. Free users are restricted to the Haiku model with access to only one connected app.
The new voice mode is available to all users in beta across platforms.
On the multilingual front, Anthropic added multilingual support to Claude's voice mode in beta earlier this year. Supported languages now include English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian), and Spanish (Latin America/Spain), though users must manually specify the language.
ANALYSIS The combination of model-tier selection and third-party app access in voice mode positions Claude's voice interface as a task-execution layer rather than a purely conversational one — a functional gap that, per TechCrunch's reporting, OpenAI's voice mode has not yet closed. The tiered access structure, restricting free users to Haiku and a single app integration, also creates a clear upsell path toward paid plans.
