Oracle Cloud Infrastructure will become the first hyperscale cloud platform outside Google to offer Google Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), part of a broader diversification that also adds Cerebras hardware and OpenAI's Jalapeño chip to the OCI compute lineup1,3.
The announcements were made at Oracle AI World in Las Vegas on October 27.
Multi-vendor silicon strategy
Oracle said it is simultaneously expanding its Nvidia relationship to "multi-gigawatt scale" with Nvidia's newest-generation Vera Rubin AI servers2. Even within those Nvidia-based systems, however, Oracle will substitute its own in-house Acceleron networking chips for some of Nvidia's networking silicon.
The Google TPU deal gives OCI customers access to custom accelerators co-designed with open software to power frontier training, large-scale inference, and the multi-step reasoning demands of agentic AI, according to the companies' joint announcement. OCI will provide the power, cooling, and datacenter networking to deploy Google TPUs at scale.
"Different AI workloads have different compute needs," said Mahesh Thiagarajan, president of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. "Bringing Google TPUs to OCI gives customers access to multiple leading AI compute architectures in one cloud. That choice gives them the flexibility to choose the right infrastructure for the performance, throughput, and economics of each AI workload".
Amin Vahdat, senior vice president and chief technologist for AI and infrastructure at Google, said the next generation of AI will require a diverse range of compute.
Neither Oracle nor Nvidia disclosed the value of the expanded Vera Rubin deal, though Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has previously said Vera Rubin systems can generate up to $40 billion in revenue per gigawatt for the chipmaker.
OpenAI integration across the stack
Separately, Oracle announced an expanded collaboration with OpenAI that brings ChatGPT and Codex into Oracle's application stack. The OpenAI partnership also extends to hardware: OCI will offer OpenAI's Jalapeño chip alongside the Google and Cerebras additions.
ANALYSIS By layering Google, Cerebras, and OpenAI silicon on top of an enlarged Nvidia footprint, Oracle is positioning OCI as a multi-architecture AI cloud, a contrast to rivals that remain more tightly coupled to a single accelerator vendor. The Acceleron networking substitution within Nvidia clusters further reduces Oracle's dependence on any one supplier's full stack.
