The Department of Defense has launched ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, custom military variants of OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok, on its centralized GenAI.mil portal, extending generative AI access to 3 million civilian and military personnel1,2.
The two products join Google Gemini, which was available when GenAI.mil first launched. The portal is designed to let Department of Defense employees use commercial frontier AI models without routing sensitive government data through ordinary consumer channels; the military versions are exempt from the data collection typical of consumer AI products.
Adoption has been rapid. More than 1.7 million unique users out of the department's 3 million personnel have already onboarded to GenAI.mil, according to the Department of Defense.
The additions also make visible which frontier lab is absent. Anthropic's Claude model is not on the platform. Anthropic was labeled a supply-chain risk by the Trump administration after it refused to give the Pentagon unrestricted use of its AI tools, a designation Anthropic is currently fighting in court.
ANALYSIS The portal now hosts models from three separate providers — OpenAI, xAI, and Google — giving the Department of Defense redundancy across frontier model families while keeping data flows within a controlled environment.
The 1.7 million onboarded users represent more than half of the department's total personnel, a adoption rate that underscores demand for generative AI tooling inside the federal government's largest employer.
The Pentagon has described the rollout as part of a broader effort to use AI tools to accelerate work and maintain a competitive edge without sacrificing security. The tools have been described as "tailored to warfighter needs".
OpenAI, separately, is in a period of commercial expansion. The company disclosed on August 31 that its advertising business has reached $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate ahead of a planned initial public offering ctx. It has also begun testing outcome-based pricing for some enterprise customers ctx. The GenAI.mil contract adds a large-scale government deployment to that portfolio.
