Shield AI's V-BAT drone received Specific Assurance and Integrity Level III (SAIL III) authorization from the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC), described as the highest authorization to date in Europe for unmanned maritime operations1. The authorization covered a Frontex maritime surveillance mission aboard the Italian Coast Guard vessel Dattilo, where two V-BATs flew 150 flight hours over 19 days, operating as far as 150 kilometers from the ship. Shield AI and operator Global Sat Tech worked with ENAC under the EASA Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) framework to secure the approval. On July 8, senior Frontex and Italian Coast Guard representatives observed a live search and rescue simulation during the deployment.
