Anthropic has agreed to pay Nscale roughly $45 billion over six years to rent approximately 460 megawatts of compute capacity at a data center development in West Virginia, according to sources cited by Bloomberg and confirmed by CNBC1,2. The facility will run on Nvidia Corp.'s Vera Rubin chips.
The data center is expected to come online at the end of 2027, according to two people with knowledge of the matter cited by CNBC. Nscale, the counterparty, is a UK-based AI infrastructure company.
The deal is the latest in a string of infrastructure agreements Anthropic has struck this year. The company has also announced deals with Advanced Micro Devices, SpaceX, Google, and Broadcom. Anthropic said earlier this year that growing demand for its Claude AI models and products has caused "inevitable strain" on its infrastructure, impacting reliability and performance for users during peak hours.
Anthropic confidentially filed its IPO prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June and has been engaging in preliminary meetings with prospective investors. The company carries a $965 billion valuation that it is under pressure to justify to investors.
ANALYSIS At $45 billion over six years, the Nscale commitment represents one of the largest single compute-rental agreements disclosed in the AI industry. The deal's scale and the choice of Nvidia Corp.'s next-generation Vera Rubin architecture position the facility as a cornerstone of Anthropic's training and inference capacity.
