OpenAI plans to buy Google TPUs, deepening cross-rival supply ties

The reported purchase would deepen OpenAI's hardware dependence on a direct rival's silicon, extending a relationship that began with TPU rentals in 2025.

OpenAI plans to purchase Google's tensor processing units as part of its AI infrastructure build-out, according to a report by The Information cited by Reuters on October 281,2. No financial terms were disclosed, and both companies declined to comment or did not immediately respond.

The reported deal extends an existing hardware relationship. A June 2025 Reuters report indicated OpenAI had begun renting Google's TPUs, and last week separate reporting said OpenAI will make its frontier models available through Google Cloud. Google's TPUs have gained traction as an alternative to Nvidia's GPUs among companies seeking cheaper AI compute.

Reuters noted that Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet together plan as much as $600 billion in AI infrastructure spending this year.

ANALYSIS A purchase rather than rental arrangement would mark a deeper hardware commitment by OpenAI to a direct competitor's silicon, turning two of the largest AI rivals into customer and supplier simultaneously.
